Transportation is a vital part of daily life, but in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, scarcity of reliable and affordable means of transport has become a major problem for residents. This issue affects everyone, especially students, workers, and small business owners, who rely on transportation to earn a living and pursue their goals.
One of the main causes of the transportation problem in Maiduguri is the rapid population growth in the city. Over the years, Maiduguri has become home to thousands of displaced people due to the insurgency in the North-east. This influx has placed immense pressure on the already limited transportation services. With more people in the city, the demand for vehicles has far surpassed the supply.
Another factor contributing to this issue is the poor state of the roads. Many roads in Maiduguri are either damaged or not properly maintained, making it difficult for vehicles to operate efficiently. During the rainy season, the situation becomes even worse as floods and potholes make some areas completely inaccessible. As a result, commercial drivers often avoid certain routes, leaving residents stranded.
The high cost of fuel is also a big problem. Due to rising fuel prices, transport operators are forced to increase their fares. Many students and workers cannot afford these high charges, leaving them with no choice but to walk long distances to their schools, offices, or markets. This not only wastes their time but also affects their productivity and education.
As students, we have firsthand experience with these challenges. Sometimes, we arrive late for classes because there are no available tricycles (keke napep) or buses. On other days, we spend a large portion of our allowance on transportation, leaving little for food and study materials.
To solve this problem, we believe the government and private stakeholders need to take urgent action. First, there should be an effort to repair and expand the road network in Maiduguri. This will encourage more transport operators to serve the city. Second, the government could introduce subsidized public transport systems, such as buses, to make commuting affordable for everyone. Lastly, policies to stabilize fuel prices and regulate transport fares would help ensure that transportation remains accessible to the average person.
The scarcity of transportation in Maiduguri is more than an inconvenience; it is a serious issue that affects the daily lives of residents. With proper planning and investment, this problem can be addressed, allowing people in Maiduguri to move freely and focus on building a better future for themselves and their community.
