In commemoration of the year 2025 World Earth Day, the Ogun state government has urged the citizens to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal and open defecation.
Speaking with newsmen at a sensitisation talk amongst market women in Abeokuta, the special adviser to the governor on Youth, Comrade Olamide Lawal, called on citizens to take action by prioritising environmental cleanliness, adding that it will help to improve better living and health standard.
Lawal, a member of the Nigeria Environmental Society (NES), who represented the Commissioner of Environment, noted that “Today, April 22, is World Earth Day, the day that we celebrate the planet that we are living and as an environmentalist, we take it upon ourselves to bring this message to the market women, where a lot of waste are being generated.
“We need to enlighten people on how to manage their waste because whatever happens to the planet reflects in us. When you have a very good environment, that is when you can have a better living standard.
“I want to commend the state sgovernment for its commitment towards ensuring clean environment in the state. I want to say that the Commissioner of Environment is really trying. He is an experienced person, a man who has also encouraged young people to be recycling their waste. We are not there yet, but I can assure you the future is very bright,” he said.
Meanwhile, the chairman of Nigerian Environmental Society, Jamiu Badmus, stated that the reason for the program is to sensitise the market women against indiscriminate waste disposal and to educate them on how to maintain their waste.
“The United Nation has set aside today to celebrate the earth. Part of our mandate is to go out to sensitise, educate and enlighten our people.
“Because the environment must guarantee our well-being, we have to live today for people that are coming up, the generation yet unborn, they equally have right to decent living,” he stated.
