A celebrated author and Traditional Ruler of Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area (LGA), Igwe Chidubem Iweka, has emerged as new Chairman of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council.
Igwe Iweka, who succeeds Onitsha monarch, Obi Alfred Achebe, whose tenure has expired, would lead the umbrella body of monarchs from across 179 communities in Anambra State for an undisclosed period of time.
Anambra state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who announced this at Awka during the launching of security initiative, “Operation Udo Ga-Chi”, explained that his appointment followed the provisions of newly amended State Traditional Rulers law.
Blueprint recalled that Soludo had in January 2024 while some monarchs were having issues with him for bestowing Chieftaincy titles on late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, disbanded the association citing violation of extent laws establishing it.
The governor had in a statement by his Press Secretary, Mr Christian Aburime, observed that the body was improperly constituted in violation of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers (Amendment) Law, 2020, which according to him, showed that it cannot make any valid decisions or function legally in the light of the provisions of the law.
It was also learnt that the amended law provided for rotation of leadership of the association among the three Senatorial zones of the State with Igwe Iweka been favoured because he hails from Anambra Central since Obi Achebe has taken the slot of the Anambra North Senatorial district.
