Obaseki’s NUT award undeserving – Talakawas

A Civil society group under the aegis of Talakawa Parliament has slammed Edo State governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, over the closure of a section of New Era College reconstructed under ex-governor Adams Oshiomhole’s administration.

The group said students have therefore been denied access to the facility since it was commissioned on November 7, 2016 and renamed after late Brig-General Samuel Ogbemudia.

Speaker of Talakawa Parliament, Marxist Kola Edokpayi, led a protest march to the State Ministry of Education in Benin City where he handed out a one-week ultimatum for the reopening of the facility.

Edokpayi vowed that the protest would be sustained at the expiration of the ultimatum if the issue is not addressed.

He described the recent award conferred on the governor in Abuja by the national leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) as the best Governor of the year 2019 as undeserving.

The speaker alleged that the “abandoned” facility has become a hideout for criminal activities.

According to him, “we have the capacity to demand for accountability in governance. We are here to send a clear message to the Governor that power is transient and he should deploy it wisely.

“Education is a veritable weapon to liberate the human society from mental slavery”, he said.

Edokpayi further wondered why government Officials in the State “live in affluence, send their children to school abroad and make children of the downtrodden whose parents and Guardians pay taxes to suffer unduly”.
