The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commended the Ebonyi government for renovating its permanent orientation camp at Afikpo, Ebonyi.
Governor David Umahi approved the sum of N400million for renovation works and erecting of new structures at the orientation camp during a visit in 2018.
State Coordinator of corps in Ebonyi, Mrs Ann Ibe, said the Director General (DG) of the corps, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim visited the camp on Aug.31 and was amazed at the level of infrastructural works at the camp.
“The DG described the orientation camp as the best in the country and specially extolled the expensive, high quality roofing sheets used in the buildings already renovated.
“He commended the governor for his love for the scheme, noting that he has created a condusive environment for other people’s children to effectively serve their fatherland.
Ibe said that Ibrahim will soon pay a ‘thank you’ visit to the governor to appreciate his numerous support to the scheme in the state.
“Ibrahim commended the scheme’s leadership in the state for its diligence and the corps members for their patriotism and orderly conduct in camp.
She remarked that the DG’s visit will spur the state’s NYSC leadership to ensure that the corps members effectively utilise the opportunity offered them to uplift themselves and serve the country in various capacities.
“We will adequately prepare them for their particular roles in the scheme and equip them with practical, social and leadership skills to meet the challenges of the service year.
“We would also lay the foundation of the much envisaged unity through interaction of corps members from different political, cultural and social backgrounds in camp.
“We will also inculcate discipline and raise the moral tone of the corps members by subjecting them to military drills and educating them on topical national issue.
The infrastructural works at the camp include reconstruction of the road leading to the camp from Afikpo town, installation of street lights, renovation of existing hostels and other facilities, reconstruction of the parade ground among others.
