NWFL: Edo Queens, Remo Stars, Robo Queens maintain perfect start

Edo Queens, Remo Stars, and FC Robo Queens maintained their perfect records with consecutive victories in Match day 2 games of the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).

Edo Queens, fresh from a resounding 5-0 victory in their season opener, traveled to Owerri to face Heartland Queens, who were reeling from a 1-0 loss to Ekiti Queens in their first game.

Goodness Osigwe, who had already made a mark with a goal on the opening day, continued her stellar form by scoring the opening goal for Edo Queens in the 40th minute, only for Monica Matthew to level the score for Heartland Queens shortly after halftime.

Goodness Osigwe struck again in the 70th minute, sealing the win for Edo Queens and preserving their perfect record in the season so far.

Remo Stars, riding high on their 3-1 triumph over Confluence Queens, saw the south-west derby as an ideal opportunity to make a bold statement to the rest of the league. On the other hand, Ekiti Queens were equally determined to build on their momentum, having defeated Heartland Queens in their opening match.

Remo Stars exuded confidence from the outset, making a fashion statement with their stylish outfits. However, when the whistle blew, signaling the start of the game, Ekiti Queens quickly demonstrated that they would be no pushover.

The first half was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities, but neither able to find the back of the net. As the teams headed into the locker room at halftime, the scoreline remained deadlocked at 0-0.

The deadlock was finally broken a few minutes after the restart, courtesy of Olamide Bolaji’s second goal of the season. Her strike handed Remo Stars a precious lead, which they managed to preserve for the remainder of the game.

The victory propelled Remo Stars into an exclusive club of teams with a 100% winning record this season. However, they remain second in the standings, behind Edo Queens on goal difference. Meanwhile, Ekiti Queens occupy fourth spot with three points.

Elsewhere, FC Robo Queens had to work hard to secure their second win of the season, following a 5-1 victory over Benue Queens in their opener. In a tough encounter against Adamawa Queens at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, the Landladies came from behind to win 2-1. Adamawa’s Anastasia Tarfo had put the visitors ahead in the 24th minute, but Favour Nkwocha equalized in the 70th minute. With the match approaching a draw, Opeyemi Ajakaye, fresh from her return to the team from the USA, scored the winner in the 90th minute, ensuring a dramatic finish for Robo Queens.
