NUJ charges Buhari to re-strategise on insecurity

Nigerian Union of Journalists, (NUJ) has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to rise to the occasion and address the rising insecurity challenges in the country.

President of the union, Comrade, Chris Isiguzo made the charge on Thursday when a group of Northern youths under the auspices of Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) decorated him with a medallion and conferred on him the title: Shield of Northern Youths,  (Garkuwa Mattassan Arewa)

Isiguzo who lamented the worsening insecurity in the country said it’s time for the federal government to change its strategy in it’s efforts at addressing the menace.

According to him, the current strategy being adopted by the Federal Government has not yielded the desired results, adding that there was need to try another strategy to stop wanton killing, kidnapping and destruction of property.

He said,  “I want to use this opportunity to call on President Muhammadu Buhari to address the high rate of insecurity in the country, because the primary purpose of governance is to protect lives and property.

“Once you cannot met this obligation, then you are not a leader, if you go to the North West it’s banditry, in the North East it’s insurgence, in the South West, South South and South East kidnapping has become the order of the day, no leader can be happy.

“I want to call on government to rise and address the challenge, we cannot continue with one strategy and expect results. It is time to try another security strategy.”

He also appealed to the president to equally address the challenge of hunger as well as poverty which according to him is ravaging the country.

He also called on the president to urgently address the hunger and poverty in the country.

Isiguzo who said he is a believer of one Nigeria, commended the Northern youths council for their passion to build the nation through orientation of the youths advised them to shun thuggery and violence.

“We are ready to support you, I want to assure you that I will not disappoint the young generation, so take the message of preaching peace and one Nigeria to the grassroots”,

Earlier, while presenting the award to the NUJ president, president of Northern Youth Council, Mr. Michael Omoba, said the award was in recognition of his transformation of the union since his assumption of office, adding that his group would partner the NUJ in its project of building the country.

The NYCN president lamented the use of hard drugs by young people in the north which he said was as a result of the ban on alcohol.

He also decried the high rate of illiteracy which he said makes for early marriage by young girls from the region.
