National Teachers Institute (NTI) has collaborated with Commonwealth of Learning (COL) to train teachers and workers of Federal Ministries of Education and Environment on how to tackle environmental challenges in the country. Th e fi ve-day capacity building workshop tagged, ‘Green Teacher Programme’ aimed at addressing the crucial roles of teachers in using education to address environmental challenges, according to the NTI Assistant Director Public Relations, Malam Muhammad Abdullahi. Director-General/CEO of NTI, Prof. Garba Dahuwa Azare, told the participants that NTI’s GTP could be approached through Integration and infusion of environment concepts. According to him, the workshop was part of the on-going eff orts to revive the process of implementing GEP which was hitherto abandoned. Azare, who was represented by the Director, Field Operations and Students Services, Dr Dele Yaya, stressed that the abuse, misuse and problems in environment “can only be addressed when there is an enlightened and environment friendly citizenry.”

Th e workshop educated participants to foster appropriate values and attitudes for the protection of and improvement of the environment in addition to engendering positive action aimed at protecting and improving the environment by individuals, diff erent social groups and communities in the context of sustainability development. It would be recalled that the UN General Assembly at its 19th Special Session in September 1997 called on all member-nations to establish appropriate institutional administrative and legal frameworks to tackle all environmental sustainability and sustainable socioeconomic development.
