NSE targets emerging market status

PIC._5The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) is set to develop a larger footprint on the African continent and ultimately target emerging market status. .
Chief executive officer, NSE, Oscar Onyema who disclosed this yesterday In Lagos at the investors clinic organised for Journalist said that the Exchange is determined to shift gears to drive innovations centred on increasing global visibility for the Nigerian capital market.
Onyema said that NSE supported the West African Capital Market Integration Council and other similar programme because they would open opportunities for Nigerian investors to extend their reach. He said that between 2011 and 2013 the NSE has been on revamping corporate governance, improving human capacity, cleansing and restructuring the market, improving technology, product development and advocacy for changes to policy.
He said that X-Gen, the new generation trading platform rolled out by the NSE has enhanced its effort to drive the market to a higher level. According to him “X-Gen opens an unprecedented level of innovative trading capabilities for the Nigerian capital market, providing direct market access for both the buy and sell sides, and mobile access through smartphones to the retail investors.
He said that the new trading platform has also improved the overall quality of market experience for all stakeholders.
He further said that the financial literacy program started in February 2012, was its first step in protecting investors. Onyema said that the programme aimed at enhancing investors’ understanding of the basics of investing around portfolio construction, asset allocation and risk diversification.

“The “Investor Clinic” aspect of the programme, which is a flag ship product for our financial literacy efforts, has been delivered in partnership with stellar organizations such as Morgan Stanley, Stanbic IBTC, Greenwich Trust and FBN Capital, just to name a few, he added. He stated that the programmes have primarily been focused on particular segments of the investing community to discuss the finer details of investing and to shed more light on the capital market eco system.
