Officials of the Enugu state Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two people for vandalising power installations at Oji River Power Station.
The suspects, 27-year-old Ifeanyi Emmanuel from Ebonyi state and 21-year- old Okoro Michael Onyebuchi from Enugu, were arrested while vandalising the power installation with three others that escaped when operatives who had been mounting surveillance on the power station engaged.
Parading the suspects, the state commandant, Nathaniel Obong, told newsmen that the two suspects were apprehended in a bush beside Iyiukwu River, Ugwunzu in Oji River, while cutting and dismounting twin cable Installation in the power station, just as three others namely; Nsofor Obinna from Imo state, Kelechi Aneke and Henry Chibuoke both from Udi in Enugu state escaped into the bush.
Ubong regretted the level of moral decadence and unpatriotic amongst Nigerians and wondered why people should delight in willful destruction of public infrastructure.
He called on communities hosting public installations to assist security agencies in monitoring such property, emphasising that vandalism of public infrastructure in act of economic sabotage and as such those that were involved in it were enemies of the country.
He said the offence which was not bailable was contrary to M17 sec nine miscellaneous offences Act 2004, laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and if found guilty carries life imprisonment as punishment.
Items arrested the suspects with includes three armoured cables of 39 feet, 36 feet and 3¼ feet, respectively, vandalised on the spot.
Also, some pieces of coated cables of different colours, one hawk sun, one metal file, one role of rope, and one Tecno grey colour hand set belonging to one the suspect at large were also recovered.
Meanwhile, the commandant of the Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Muhammad Gidado, said no less than 150 private guards were undergoing training at the Jigawa state command.
The commandant, who spoke to our reporter yesterday in Dutse, said that the training which began from May 5, 2014, would last for two weeks.
He explained that the participants were also drawn from three Private security Guards Companies (PGCs) operating in the state, namely Halogen Security, Kings Guards and Prudent Security, respectively.
“50 participants were drawn from the three selected PGSs. The guards would be exposed to modern surveillance, intelligence and information gathering as well as interpersonal relationship among others,” he said.
