Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubairu has disclosed that the target is now to win a record-extending eighth U20 AFCON championship.
Nigeria stopped Senegal 3-1 on penalties after both teams played out a scoreless draw in 120 minutes of action at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia Monday afternoon securing qualification for the FIFA U20 World Cup ticket in the process..
The Flying Eagles held their nerves in the penalty shootout, while the Young Teranga Lions could not.
“This is a big win for Nigeria, but we are not celebrating yet. We came here with a goal — to qualify for the World Cup and challenge for the title. One box is ticked, now we keep pushing,” the Flying Eagles coach celebrated.
In the semifinal, they will face either the impressive South Africans or DR Congo.
The coach said they were prepared all possibilities against the defending champions.
“We trained for this moment. Every possible scenario was prepared for — including penalties. The boys stuck to the plan and executed it when it mattered the most. That’s what champions do,” he stated.
