Worried by the menace of famers and herdsmen clashes, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged the federal government to convert the dreaded Sambisa forest to a grazing reserve.
The agency also asked government at all levels to emulate the ban on open grazing in Taraba, Benue and Ekiti states.
Assistant Director of NOA in Esan West local government area, Edo state, Mrs. Iretekha Ibharalu, stated this in a lecture at a one-day “Peace Building and Security Awareness Campaign” in the council.
In the lecture titled: “Curbing Herdsmen and Communal Farmers’ Clashes,” Mrs. Ibharalu disclosed that indiscriminate cattle grazing had contributed to destruction of farms, vegetation and cause other security concerns.
She advocated for compensation for victims of herdsmen attack, adding that the attackers should be made to face the law.
The State Director of the agency, Mrs. Grace Eseka, called on all to be law- abiding, eschew vices and unpleasant comments about other people.
On his part, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the council, CSP Rufus Odediran, in a paper titled: “Ensuring Peace and Security: The Role of Community Stakeholders,” called for constitutional roles for traditional rulers in maintaining law and order.
