No population, housing census in 2018 – NPC

Nigeria will no longer be conducting the long overdue national population and housing census in 2018, the National Population Commission (NPC) has said.
Disclosing this development to newsmen in Abuja yesterday, the chairman of the commission Eze Duruiheom, admitted that his commission was not yet ready for the exercise.
The last time Nigeria conducted a national population and housing census was in 2006, meaning that the next exercise was due in 2016 but could not hold owing to financial and logistical issues.
Duruiheom said the commission has so far enumerated and demarcated only 74 out of the 774 LGAs of the federation, a case which has made some Nigerians to doubt the capacity of the NPC to carry out its constitutional mandate.
“It has become obvious that getting accurate population data for national development will remain a mirage until the country gets it right through population and housing census”, a senior staff at the commission who spoke anonymously told Blueprint yesterday.
