No more social activities within campuses — IBBUL

The management of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), has warned students of the institution to henceforth desist from organising all kinds of social activities within and outside the school campuses, till further notice.

The deliberate measure, the management said was aimed at stemming the tide of crimes being perpetrated by hoodlums and miscreants within and outside the main and Kobo campus of the institution.

The decision was reached at an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting at the Senate chamber, chaired by vice chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare.

The VC, while addressing audience at the meeting, said giving the prevailing situation, it was necessary to hold a series of discussions where major stakeholders would be advised to key-in to agreements reached.

The meeting which comprised of the Police, Civil Defence, Road Safety Corps, local vigilantes, student-leaders, landlords and the representative of Etsu Lapai, took some far-reaching decisions that would help in curtailing the spate of violent crimes committed by students and other criminals in the town.

In his contribution, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the university, Major Ndagi Tete Kudu (rtd), who observed that landlords have a role to play in the security of tenants, advised them to employ the services of private security guards in their houses and student lodges.

He urged them to register their lodges with security agencies, especially the police, in case of any unpalatable situation. He added that each tenant must be issued with receipt after payment, stressing that the unnecessary transfer and acceptance of tenants with questionable characters should be avoided.

Speaking, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Lapai Division, Superintendent Yakubu Yusuf, emphasised the need for residents of the town and students to be familiar with their neighbours, urging them to stop concealing vital information from security personnel.

Mr. Yusuf assured that the police would henceforth be mounting heavy security surveillance in Lapai town, even as he called on the landlords to personally be attending such kind of strategic security meetings, and stop sending their representatives.

The Shaba of Lapai, Engineer Abdulkadir Lapai, who represented Etsu Lapai, expressed displeasure that gambling centres are daily sprouting up in the town, pointing out that such centres serve as breeding grounds for criminals and their criminal activities.

He however, said Lapai emirate will soon fashion out measures and effective ways to tackle the emerging social vice.
