NMS crucial to criminal justice law implementation – Centre 

The Centre for Socio-Legal Studies (CSLS) said the nation’s judicial system has recorded significant improvements since the passage of the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws (ACJL).

President of the centre, Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George, SAN, disclosed this during a two-day capacity- building workshop on the National Minimum Standard (NMS) for effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and Laws in states.

Continuing, Prof. Yemi said the programme which held in Benin City, Edo state capital, is also being held across six states where RoLAC is working to improve the justice system.

The president noted: “The purpose of the workshop is to promote a deeper understanding among participants and the general public, of the National Minimum Standard for effective implementation of ACJA, and the ACJL  in States.”

He discribed  the National Minimum Standard as a document that has brought together,  the most salient features of the ACJL/ACJA of various states in a single document.

According to him, “The NMS is a document that has been accepted by the body of Attorney-Generals, Solicitor-Generals, Permanent Secretaries of Ministries of justice across the country.”

Earlier, facilitator of the Centre, Ugochukwu Emmanuel, said the workshop was geared to review the implementation and  adoption of the NMS for adoption by States for effective implementation of ACJL. 

The workshop attracted stakeholders in the justice sector, including Justice Williams Aziegbemhin of Edo State High Court.

Aziegbemi admonished participants to be more practical in thier approach to implementing the ACJL.

On her part, the Edo state coordinator of the program, Princess Esosa Osula,

said contributions from participants at the workshop indicated that key players in the justice system were ready to embrace the NMS.

Osula, who is also the secretary of ACJMC commended his Lordship, Justice William Aziegbemi, for his immense contributions and guidance at the workshop.
