NIHORT’ll support FG on food security, employment generation-  Director 

The Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Dr Mohammed Lawal Attanda, Thursday, said the institute will support the federal government in achieving food security, employment generation and economic diversification. 

Dr. Attanda stated this in Ibadan while speaking at the two- day 2023 Annual In House Research Review and Planning meeting, held at the institute’s headquarters in Ibadan.

He said the expectation of the federal government is high for NIHORT to support her drive towards achievement of food security, employment generation and economic diversification.

He added that NIHORT would work to meet the demand for domestic need of horticultural crops.

“The expectation of the federal government is high for NIHORT to support her drive towards achievement of food security, employment generation and economic diversification. The institute shall work to meet the demand for domestic need of horticultural crops e.g Tomato, Citrus and value-added products.

“In addition, exports of some horticultural crops like pineapple mango, plantain, banana and avocado pear in international markets shall be promoted. Improved horticultural seeds and seedlings shall be made available to farmers”.

Speaking further, he stated that the institute has the national mandate to conduct research into the genetic improvement, production technologies, processing, storage, utilisation and marketing of tropical fruits, vegetables, spices and ornamental plants of nutritional and economic importance. 

“The institute is the only Horticultural Research Institute in Sub Saharan Africa saddled with these tasks. Hence, a lot of responsibilities fall on us to develop technologies on horticultural produce and products for local and export market, health, industrial raw materials and employment generation.”
