Niger: Police arrest 16 over robbery, stealing of phones, motorcycles 

 

The police in Niger state have arrested 16 suspects for robbery, stealing of phones and motorcycles in Minna. 

The police stated this on Wednesday in Minna in a press release by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger state police command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun. 

DSP Abiodun said four of the arrested suspects were receivers, adding that 21 phones and three motorcycles were recovered from the suspects. 

He said, “On 13/08/2023 at about 1330hrs, based on information received that some miscreants who specialized in robbing victims of handsets and motorcycles were sighted in Morris area of Minna. On receipt of the information, a team of Police operatives attached to the Tactical Support Team of the Command mobilized to the scene and arrested the following suspects”.

He named those arrested to include Jibrin Ndako, Moh’d Usman and Kure Musa. 

The PPRO said in the course of the investigation, the suspects revealed that they had been engaging in stealing motorcycles and snatching handsets, mostly at night within Minna metropolis such as Barkin-Sale, Kpakungu, Shiroro road, Mandela road, Soje-A, Sauka-Kahuta and environs.

He said that the suspects led the police team to the receivers who they sold most of the Phones to, adding that they are Nasiru Moh’d, Suleiman Abubakar , Baba Ahmadu and Murtala Isah.

According to the PPRO, one Labaran of Obasanjo complex who specialises in deleting IMEI number of stolen phones, is presently at large, while twenty-one phones were recovered from the suspects.

He said that in furtherance to the confessions of Jibrin and Usman, a follow-up investigation revealed that about ten motorcycles were stolen at different locations in Minna and five receivers of the stolen motorcycles who bought the motorcycles within the range of N80, 000 to N120,000 from them were arrested at Paiko.

Those arrested in connection with receiving the stolen motorcycles are Zakari Salihu , Sahabi Salihu, Bashiru Kabiru , Suleiman Tanko and Ismail Umar.
