Niger state House of Assembly has summoned the District Manager of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDCO) to appear before it on Tuesday over the epileptic power supply to the state for over two months.
The summons followed unanimous adoption of a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance by the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Hussaini Ibrahim, who argued that the electricity supply in the state had become worst in recent months.
“That the House is more worried that these interrupted electricity supply had lead to destruction of consumers’ electrical appliances, while the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has failed to inform its consumers the reasons for its inability to supply regular electricity,” he said.
He argued that it was necessary for the House to invite the District Manager to explain the reasons behind the situation.
In his contribution, the Minority Leader, Ahmad Bello, expressed dismay that the irregular supply of electricity had crimpled both business and government activities, adding that there was the urgent need for the electricity company to provide solution to the problem.
He lamented that Niger state was in total black out in the presence of three hydro power stations, adding that “Niger state should have been given priority in the distribution of generated megawatts.”
He regretted that consumers were made to pay for the light they did not consume with high tariff describing it as unfair exploitation.
The motion was unanimously adopted before the Speaker, Hon. Marafa Ahmed Guni, directed the Clerk to write and invite the district manager of the distribution company to the House on Tuesday, next week.
