Former Commissioner for Local Government Community Development and Chieftaincy Affair in Niger state, Barrister Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Niger state House of Assembly.
Sarkin Daji, representing Mariga constituency of the state, was nominated by the member representing Bida II Mohammed Haruna and seconded by member representing Borgu constituency, Hon. Abdulrahaman Gambo at the inauguration of the assembly on Tuesday.
Hon. Afiniki Dauda, representing Gurara constituency, the only female member in the 10th assembly, also emerged as the deputy speaker.
Other principal officers of the Assembly as nominated by their various political parties were later announced.
The Clerk of the Assembly, Alhaji Abdullahi Kagara who inaugurated the new new Assembly and administered oath of office on the 25 members
In his acceptance speech, the new Speaker promised to provide servant leadership and adding that he will not let down the Assembly.
“I want to appreciate the Executive Governor of Niger state, Hon. Umaru Bago for upholding the principle of democracy and not interference with the emergence of the house leadership,” he said.
He said that the Assembly will collaborate with the Executive Arm of the government to ensure the transformation and development of the Niger state in all aspects, adding that, “the House will partner with the executive to ensure that the current security challenges in parts of the state are addressed.”
