NHRC’ll fight for women’s fair representation – Ojukwu

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday felicitated with Nigerian women on the celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day.

The Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu Esq. commended the resilience of the Nigerian woman despite the pushback from Nigerian men since the Beijing Declaration and platform of Action 25 years ago, stressing that the commission will continue to press for adequate representation of women in all aspects of national affairs.

The Executive Secretary made the statement via a press release issued by the Director Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Mr. Lambert Oparah Monday in Abuja.

The release stated that Ojukwu promised to work with other stakeholders in bringing about legislations that would provide opportunities for Nigerian women to achieve gender equality and parity for women to realise their potentials, especially in politics and business.

This year’s theme “Each for Equal” reflects on the opportunity for all especially those in authority to ensure that women are given the  equal space with men to make their contributions to the society.

The Executive Secretary stated that the Special Investigation Panel on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) currently carrying investigations across the country is a deliberate programme by the commission to proffer lasting solution to the issue of gender based violence in our society . Empowerment of women and banishment of women poverty are crucial so as not to leave women behind in achieving the sustainable development agenda for 2030 and 2063. These and other parts of our national life that are oppressive to women must change so as to leave no one behind in realising the full potentials on our dear country.
