A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Abyelo Youth Empowerment and Development Foundation (AYEDEF), has called on the residents of Galadimawa community in the FCT to stop improper waste disposal in the area.
President of the group, Mr. Na’Allah Dogara, made this known to newsmen during a recent refuse evacuation exercise in Galadimawa area.
Dogara said that frequent malaria attacks by some residents were attributed to the untidy environment and improper waste disposal in the area.
He said: “Despite the community’s efforts to evacuate refuse and keep the environment clean, some people have failed to comply with sanitation rules and regulations. We came out today to do our best in terms of creating awareness on proper waste disposal and to keep Galadimawa community clean. Some people in the have refused to do the right thing.”
The president added that the group would ensure that the refuse dump site in the area was fenced and a security attached to ensure proper disposal.
“This area we are evacuating right now is a cemetery and we are trying to see that it is fenced.”
Dogara emphasised that sanitation exercise should be a matter of necessity and should be observed daily in every home for healthy living.
He warned against open defaecation and the inability to build toilets by some landlords in the area, stressing that good approach to sanitation exercise “is a panacea to health hazards in every society.”
“Landlords who build houses without toilet facilities have been warned to do so and failure to do that will be charged to the appropriate authorities. I advise the residents to stop the dumping of refuse in gutters and should join hands with the administration in the development of the Area Council.”
