NGO assists children with disabilities

A non-governmental organisation (NGO), The Atmosphere of Love Chaplaincy (ALC), has empowered some school children with disabilities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking recently at the empowerment of the children ceremonies, the Commandant-General of the Chaplaincy, Dr. Desmond Ononuju, said the gesture was informed by the need to encourage the less privileged ones in the society.

He said the banquet and loan disbursement were put together by the NGO to “show love to those who many thought had been forgotten.”
Ononuju emphasised the need for groups or individuals supporting those not physically fit to take care of themselves.

He stressed that providing succour for such categories of children was the group’s major concern, regretting that as a result of some limitations as a body that was not being funded by government, it had slowed down most of the intended activities.
Ononuju added that selecting a few of the physically challenged children became necessary for him and other officers of the organisation to contribute a little in adding value to their lives.

He said the assistance would also support their parents in meeting up with other needs, given the present economic hardship in the country.
“This organisation is doing this to give them more hope in the society, if no one cares to share or identify with disabilities they won’t feel as part of the society,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that the programme featured a special dinner, donation of school materials to the children with undisclosed amounts of cash to them.
