The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee had to reject a proposal to have former Barcelona, Chelsea and Ajax coach Henk Ten Cate, 70, lead the Super Eagles with Eric Chelle also part of a joint coaching partnership.
According to report on SCORENigeria, one of the proposals brought forward to the technical committee for consideration was for Henk Ten Cate, who until recently was assistant coach of his native Surinam, to be the chief coach of the Super Eagles, while Eric Chelle would be the technical adviser.
The idea was for Eric Chelle to come with his knowledge of African football, while Henk Cate will bring his European tactical acumen.
“The proposal was rejected by the committee because it will bring confusion to the Super Eagles as there would be two captains on the ship,” the source told SCORENigeria
“Also, at 70 it was agreed that the rigours of coaching in Africa could be too much to handle for Henk Ten Cate.”
Henk Ten Cate won the Dutch championship with Ajax, he also assisted compatriot Frank Rijkaard to win the UEFA Champions League and La Liga title with Barcelona.
He was also assistant Chelsea manager briefly.
