NEMA’ll be proactive on disaster management – Coordinator

Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North-west zonal office, Mr. Ishaya Isah Chonoko has expressed the agency’s readiness in responding to emergency needs, especially in times of banditry and flooding.

Speaking at a retreat organised by NEMA for staffers under the zone held at the Royal Tropicana Hotel in Kano, Tuesday, Chonoko said  there was the compelling need for NEMA staffers to develop further steps for disaster management discussion in view of the valuable opportunity to openly discuss issues that concern the activities of the agency.

He said the retreat would be a perfect place for all staff to reflect on the organisation and to spend some time thinking about a bigger picture of the agency and to get everyone excited around a united mission and building bond between and among staff and stakeholders, stressing that it was NEMA’s concern to ensure that collaborative relationship with stakeholders is greatly enhanced.

He, however, stated that the agency had since embarked on the sensitisation and awareness campaign of major stakeholders in disaster management due to the rise of major threats of  banditry, kidnapping,  incessant fire outbreaks and flooding  among  others, resulting in colossal loss of lives and destruction of property.

“I call for a strong synergy and collaboration among NEMA staff, disaster management stakeholders and the communities to identify their responsibilities for proactive measures in preventing, responding   and mitigating the impact of emergencies and disaster situations.

“Let me implore all of you as critical stakeholders, to use this forum to brainstorm and exchange ideas for your diverse professional  perspectives and come out with  a holistic and affordable ways by  which we shall together confront all disaster situations,” he  stated.
