NEF demands justice for Seaman Abbas over alleged torture, incarceration

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) Monday expressed concern over the alleged unjust treatment of Seaman Haruna Abbas, a military officer reportedly subjected to egregious misconduct within the armed forces.

NEF called for swift justice and accountability in the matter.

In a statement by its director of Publicity and Advocacy, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the NEF demanded immediate action from the military hierarchy to review the case of Seaman Abbas and provide him with the necessary support for rehabilitation.

“We demand that the military hierarchy take immediate steps to review this case and provide the necessary support for Seaman Abbas’s rehabilitation. It is critical that the injustices he has faced be addressed with urgency to restore his dignity and that of his family,” the statement read.

NEF also called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the case,  stating that a culture of accountability and adherence to the rule of law must prevail within the armed forces.

“Our soldiers must be allowed to carry out their duties without the fear of persecution for actions that are not only lawful but commendable,” NEF stated.

The forum said the military must ensure that no officer suffers unjust punishment for performing their duties ethically and responsibly, stressing that justice for individuals like Seaman Abbas is essential to maintaining national integrity.

The case of Seaman Abbas was recently highlighted by his wife, Mrs. Husaina Abbas, during an appearance on Berekete Family TV in Abuja.

According to her, her husband has been incarcerated for six years under punitive conditions, allegedly on the orders of his superior, Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad S. Adamu, commander of his battalion.

Mrs. Abbas revealed that the punishment was not due to any criminal activity but stemmed from Seaman Abbas’s act of gathering soldiers for prayer, reflecting his commitment to the spiritual well-being of his troops.

NEF condemned the decision to punish Seaman Abbas for promoting unity among his peers, stating that such actions could demoralise soldiers and undermine the operational effectiveness of the military.
