The MD/CEO of North East Development Commission (NEDC), Ambassador Goni Mohammed Alkali,Wednesday said it is part of the commission’s mandate to ensure environmental sanitation, hygiene, health and water supply to the people in most critical and strategic locations within the state capitals of the six states of the North -eastern region.
He said the states are Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Taraba and Bauchi states where it has embarked on awarding contracts and engaging youth who are unemployed.
He stated further that the NCDC engaged in urban and rural areas to clean drainages and roads, especially during the raining season when almost all drainages are blocked and stacked with refuse dumps and garbage.
Speaking at Lawan Bukar Nimeri area of Shehuri ward of Maiduguri Metropolis, he said about 50 such boreholes have been drilled and connected with solar energy system to provide constant power supply on daily basis.
He added that over one million meters of drainage network clearing has also been embarked upon by the commission in the six states and pledged to provide protection tube devices and kits to the youth being engaged in the nearest future.
The commission will also ensure that they are properly monitored and supervised by members of staff.
He said plans are also underway to reach every part of the communities in each state of the North-east zone while assuring sustainability of such projects.
The CEO further stated that the commission will look into the possibility of providing immediate and alternative measures to address permanently the perennial water problems identified in some areas of the metropolis visited alongside provisions for future planning of other areas yet to be visited.
He said,” On the number of kilometers of drainage that we are targeting, I told some of your colleagues, our idea here is to do many drainages at the same time.”
