Against the backdrop of the importance of a drug free society, the NDLEA has embarked on sensitization of drivers of Peace Mass Transit Motors as prelude to this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse, with Theme: A Message of Hope, Drug Abuse Is Preventable And Treatable, as similar efforts is being considered to enlighten drivers of other reputable transport companies and the National Union of Road Transport Union
Workers of Nigeria members and markets across the country.
Apart from being warned against getting drunk on wheels and engaging in other drugs while conveying other lives in their vehicles, the drivers were lectured to be careful with the nature of loads their passengers carry and to be free from arrest, they should endeavor to search properly their luggage.
Officials of NDLEA, Henry Uzi and Peter Ugah, posited that the exercise was a routine enlightenment and partnership with drivers as nobody is immune from drug abuse and drivers were also opportune to see physically the nature of drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroine, alcohol, cigarette, tranquilizers, caffeine and others.
Earlier, the Area Manager of Peace Mass Transit Motors, Ferdinard Ibekwe, had commended the NDLEA for its commitment to the partnership, which will go a long way at not only reducing drug abuse, but also for the training of their staff on the need to drive without getting drunk which is a major factor of accidents on our roads.
He appealed for enough information to enable the firm to mobilize its staff to attend the training and enlightenment campaign, just as he implored the drivers to abide by the rules and regulations against drinking while on steering and stay away from drugs.
He also averred that the company has not relented in cautioning drivers on the need to search passengers’ luggage which sneaked drugs into their loads to avoid arrest and detention.
