NCWS partners FG, BoI on women empowerment

National Council of Women Societies (NWCS), in partnership with the federal government and the Bank of Industry (BOI), has empowered one million women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with 50,000 each to enable them to set up or improve on their businesses. Speaking during the activities to mark her fi rst year as the NCWS National President, Mrs. Gloria Laraba Shoda, said the gesture followed the Council’s desire to better the lives of girls, women and families at large. According to him, the empowerment will extend to the 774 local governments across the country. She said: “I remain fully committed to renewing, restructuring, reintegrating and re-energising the average Nigerian women everywhere in the country and as you can see we have swung into action.

“My vision is to see Nigerian women empowered to fully and eff ectively participate in the political and socio-economic sectors of society, to enable them play signifi cant roles as change agents and contributors to safer and stronger communities and society as a whole.” Continuing, she said: “It is only by investing in women; placing them at the centre of development and ensuring inclusion of our skills in nation building that there will be better economies and societies. “We want to see the government integrate gender into its development agenda all the way, taking into account the needs of women and girls in public policy and governance.

” Earlier, wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, who was represented by the former Deputy Governor of Plateau state, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, lauded the NCWS’ eff orts to eradicating poverty among women. Speaking, the BoI representative stressed the importance of empowering women, saying when women were empowered, “it means every citizen is empowered because they are caring by nature.”
