Nigeria Navy (NN) Western Naval Command officers have offered free medical services to the residents of the host communities around Marine Bridge, Ajegunle, Apapa in Lagos.
The NN stated that the exercise was part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and year-end activities of the command.
They also said the Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy provided free medical services to residents of Marine Bridge in Apapa, Lagos and while the initiative, tagged Medical Rhapsody, aimed to offer vital healthcare services to indigent citizens and foster stronger civil-military relations in the host community.
Speaking at the event, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen stated the importance of the outreach.
He said: “It is high time we give back to the Apapa community that has hosted us for years. This program is not only about providing medical care but also uplifting the morale and confidence of the community, especially during challenging times.
“The residents benefitted from various healthcare services, including blood pressure checks, malaria and dental treatments, distribution of treated mosquito nets, eye examinations with free medicated eyeglasses, and access to essential pharmaceuticals.
“The program also featured an enlightening health talk by Captain O.O. Omole, who underscored the importance of routine health checks for longevity.”
The FOC who was ably represented by the deputy command, Administrative Officer, Captain F.I. Uchime, noted that the program reinforces the Navy’s commitment to strengthening civil-military relations, dispelling perceptions of hostility, and fostering trust between the NN and its host communities.
He said NN’s job is to protect its citizens’ life, properties and not an enemy of the communities.
