NANS rallies support for tertiary power supply project

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has risen in defence of the Energising Education Programme (EEP) which it said is being sabotaged by the National Assembly.

National President of the association, Comrade Kadiri Aruna, while briefing the media, yesterday in Abuja, said the federal government introduced the EEP in the 2018 appropriation Bill to address increment in school fees due to utility bills.

According to Aruna, the EEP is a programme designed by the ministry of power, works and housing to ensure constant power electricity at the tertiary institutions, regretting however that the project is not supported by the lawmakers.

“We have lost comrades to road accidents, and other forms of deaths including unresolved disappearances of student activists. Others have list their studentship, degrees, liberty, dignity and future tainted due to incessant increment in school fees.

“The school fees is being increased due to utility bills, mainly the purchase of diesel to power electricity in the tertiary institutions which has always been resisted by the leadership of the student movement,” he explained.

“This programme solves the problem of the increment in school fees and provides electricity supply to tertiary institutions and University Teaching Hospitals, it is one of the best ways of solving the power problems and make institutions real centres of excellence,” he added.

NANS president expressed displeasure that such laudable project lack legislative support, stating that students will not relent until they are assured by NASS that it won’t be truncated.
