Multiple associations, endless exploitations

Th e motive behind the formation of trade associations is still obscure.

Th eir formation appears to be shrouded by some ulterior and selfi sh motives, including fi nancial aggrandizement.

Most of these associations claim to be fi ghting the cause of their members, but their activities reveal that they are doing the exact opposite.

If they were truly interested in the welfare of their members, why do they force some members who are not willing to join into the associations? Th e truth is that the founders of these associations enrich themselves while the members suff er.

Th ey are more or less reaping the eff orts of many industrious entrepreneurs by engaging them in activities that rip them off eventually.

Of great concern is the fact that these associations form a pillar behind the skyrocketing prices of commodities and services in Nigeria.

Th ey control the prices of the goods and services produced by their members.

Th is is to increase their prospects of prosperity and progress without a consideration for their hapless members.

But there are millions of Nigerians who cannot aff ord basic needs because of the unscrupulous increase in the prices of commodities.

Th ese associations should know that membership of any association should be based on free will and interest, not coercion, if they really mean to fi ght for the interests of Nigerian entrepreneurs.

I do not seek to attack anybody, but to correct some of the anomalies in our dear country.
