The Olujumu of Ijumu Kingdom in Kogi state, Oba Williams Olusegun Ayeni, has charged the chairman of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig.- Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), to remain focused on the agency’s constitutional responsibility of tackling drug abuse and without fear or favour.
He gave the charge at his palace in Iyara on Friday when Gen. Marwa paid him a courtesy visit.
He said, “It will also interest you to note that Kogi state shares borders with nine states and the Federal Capital Territory which makes it volatile to the movement of illicit Drugs. Ijumu local government alone shares boundaries with Ekiti, Ondo and Edo states as well as four local government areas in the state.
“That is why I want to appeal to you to use your good office to establish a unit of the agency in Ijumu local government for effective check of movement of drugs through the state to other parts of the country and for us in Ijumu, we will continue to support the agency to enable you achieve your dreams and aspiration for the country.”
Responding, Gen. Marwa solicited the support of traditional rulers across the country towards “nipping issues of illicit drugs and narcotics in the bud.”
“Traditional rulers are important stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse; the agency under my watch counts on traditional rulers to partner with their chiefs to win the war against drug trafficking. Your request to have a unit of the agency in your local government will be looked into without delay,” he said.
