A lecturer at the Federal University Ndufu – Alike Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi state, Engr Nsed Ayip Akonjom, has said that Modular technology will definitely put Nigeria on the right path towards achieving optimal socio-economic growth.
This he added can done “with a large part of the citizen empowered through gainful employment thanks to a very easy and implementable scheme like this. All hands need to be on deck in institutionalizing sound policies that will see us attaining the dreams and aspirations of true Nigerians through this scheme.
He stated this in a presentation titled ‘Modular Technology Based Capacity Development in Maintenance Engineering and Management towards the Diversification of Nigeria’s Economy,’ co-authored by Senior Technical Officer, Nigerian Television Authority Calabar, Cross River state, Engr. Ashiathah Ashie Ikposhi, at the National Engineering Conference and AGM of the Nigerian Society of Engineers in Abuja.
“Nigeria needs to do things differently if we are to attain greatness,” he said.
According to Engr Akonjom, “This work looked at the simplification of technology by introducing modularization in all facets of Nigeria’s productive line. It is clearly seen as the way forward.
“Modularization brings about easy access to technology, low acquisition cost of such technology, ease of man-power development, concentration of much-needed technology within the catchment where it is needed, leading to specialized labour force, ease in transforming primary product to secondary and then tertiary, as well as employing user friendly machines that are easy to operate and maintain. This will in turn stimulate research and development in critical areas and enhance and encourage the use of indigenous technology that preceded that colonial era,” he explained.
The university don further said that “Diversification of the economy is a sure way to go. Diversification calls for spread in our technological and economical options. Developing a sustainable strategy is key. With modularization we can break the production process into modules for ease of operation and maintenance within manageable capacity per day. Small but many operations of a particular level yield a large output eventually. Large factories that require high-level man-power to operate and maintain which had been and is the bane of industrializing the nation Nigeria. A shift from this will do us a whole lot of good,” he added.
