Meet Bonzlight, new Afrobeats sensation on the rise

There are several champions of Afrobeats but unquestionably, the torchbearers are Davido, Wizkid and Burna Boy with many more following in their footsteps. While there is a long list of Afrobeats upcoming artists, one name seems to have moved up the ladder to the limelight and is none other than Ondo State young man known as Bonzlight,

Bonzlight waltzed from nowhere into prominence with the banger “Update” featuring Eleniyan & Stunna.. The song, which came with a fresh breath of something new, was masterfully delivered with beautiful, sensual, smooth vocals and excellent instrumentals.

Bonlight describes his music as a blend of modern pop and Afrobeats sound. In fact he prides himself on being the creator of this hybrid genre of music. According to him, his special genre is what distinguishes him from other artists out there.

“My music is a fusion of what I grew up listening to, KSA, K1 De Ultimate, Fela and Obey. It is a blend of modern pop and Afrobeats sound. It’s a special blend created by me, and it’s different and it’s my unique sound,” he said.

His musical diversity stems from his belief that an artist should not be limited to one particular genre. He believes music is an experiment that should be explored, create and recreate to display an ingenious talent

“I do Afrobeats with a fusion of anything with an African sound. I don’t think artists should stick to one sound, you should experiment, just like Davido moved from Naija Afrobeats to South African sound. I like the way he is flexible. There are 2Baba and Sound Sultan, may his soul rest in perfect peace. My music is like that but with more fusion of Fuji and Juju,” he said.

Early last year he stirred up the emotions of music lovers with a single titled “Update” featuring Eleniyan & Stunna.

Presently, he is all set to drop a four-track Extension Play (EP) titled “Smooth Operator” consisting of tracks like Smooth Operator, African Girl, Stronger and I Pray.

Bonzlight has won awards at the African Music Festival in the United Arab Emirates where he is based now.”
