Matawalle closes Zamfara school, suspends staff for desecrating Qur’an

The Zamfara state Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle has suspended all staff of Shatima Model Primary School, Tudun Wada, Gusau indefinitely following report of molestation and desecration of the Holy Qur’an in the school’s toilets.

The director press affairs to the governor, Yusuf Idris, stated this in a statement issued to journalists in Gusau, Saturday, adding that the governor also ordered for the indefinite closure of the school and directed the state Universal Basic Education Board to immediately recruit and post three additional security men to all the public primary schools in Gusau, the state capital.

Yusuf quoted Governor Matawalle as directing all security agencies and relevant Shariah implementation bodies to set up a committee that will investigate the unholy act.

He called on people of the state to be more vigilant and report all those involved in the act to security agencies for prompt action while calling on Islamic  scholars in the state to enlighten their followers on the negative impacts of desecration and molestation of the Holy Qur’an.

The governor strongly warned perpetrators of the evil act to stop it as his administration was committed to sanctioning anybody found wanting, regardless of his or her position.

In the same vein, the state government has constituted a 24-man committee to investigate the desecration of the Holy Qur’an.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bala Bello Maru, the inauguration of the committee followed the recent report of desecration of the Qur’an by unknown person at Shattima Primary School in Gusau the state capital last week.

Members of the committee include Professor Ja’afar Makau Kaura who serves as chairman with Islamic scholars, the educationists, representatives of security agents, council of chiefs, the NBA, ZAROTA, NUT and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as members.

“The sum of two million naira (N2 million) has been placed as reward for any person who provides any information leading to the arrest of any person involved in the desecration and molestation of the holy Qur’an in the state,” the SSG said.
