Scores of people were believed to have been killed in a renewed fight between Igbira and Bassa in Toto local government area of Nasarawa state. The over two decades of communal violence over the chieftaincy stool of Ugya, recurred recently due to a disagreement between veteran youths of the two tribes.
Blueprint gathered that corpses were littered in Ugya town as the villagers have since deserted to the neighbouring local government for fear of further attacks. Chairman of Toto local government area, Prince Adamu Dauda, alleged that Bassa mercenary from Kogi state crossed the river bank of Kogi and Nasarawa states through Ummuaisha and launched attack on his innocent people, adding that the incident was a spill-over from Kogi state.
“Since I assumed office as chairman of Toto local government area there has been rumour that Bassa mercenary would attack us from Kogi state, of which proactive measures were put in place but at the early hours of (today) yesterday, these mercenary attacked us,” he said, describing the incident as unfortunate. Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DPS John Kennedy, said preliminary reports revealed that it was a spill-over of what happened in Kogi state, forcing people to cross over to Nasarawa state through Ummuaisha. While calling on the people of the area to remain calm, the police spokesman said the command had taken measures to address the challenge.
