An Ado-Ekiti High Court, yesterday, sentenced a 35-year-old man, Olowo Ismaila, to 14 years imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old girl.
The presiding Judge, Justice Dele Omotoso, held that the prosecution has proved the case against Olowo beyond reasonable doubt, saying that the evidence before the court including the medical report proved that Ismaila committed the crime.
The judge ruled that Ismaila’s sentence would start counting from 14th April, 2016 when he was first remanded in prison custody for the offence.
The convict committed the crime on 1st of February, 2016 in Iluomoba-Ekiti, Gbonyin local government area of Ekiti state.
The prosecution counsel, Mr. Akinola Abon, in proving the case, called witnesses and tendered exhibits while the convict gave evidence in his own defence during trial.
Abon in his reaction said the verdict would serve as a deterrent to those engage in sexual offences including the rape of minors.
Defence counsel, Mr. Babatunde Falade, said he would consult with his client to take stand on the appeal of the judgment.
