Man alleges task force brutalisation in Edo

A resident in Edo state, Mr. Omorose Kingsley, has petitioned the state coordinator of Edo state Public Works Guard, Mr. Mutari Osagie, over an alleged assault and malicious damage on his person.

In a petition he wrote through Lucas Aiyobe & Co Legal Practitioners and titled: “Malicious damage and conduct capable of breaching the peace,” Kingsley narrated how official of the taskforce identified as wellington pounced on him.

Copies of the petition were also sent to the AIG Zone 5, the state police Command and Department of State Services (DSS).

His counsel said: “Our client was working along 3rd East Circular by Sokpoba Road around Mobil filling station on August 11, 2017, where upon he saw two purported gentlemen engaged in a battle of wits which almost metamorphosed into a brawl and our client tried to mediate and maintain peace between them

“And our client was taken aback by one of them, simply identified as Wellington, who pounced on him telling him he has no right whatever to intervene in a matter between two of them.

“Thereafter, the said Wellington who is a member of the tax committee called a police officer that was attached to them to take him away and put him in a Black Maria in an attempt to humiliate and oppress our client.

“When our client was now in a Black Maria, having given his phone to his friend, the said Wellington went straight to our client’s friend, collected his phone from him, brought out the memory card and smashed the phone to the ground.

“Sequel to this, the leader of the committee, Mr. Mutari Osagie, invited our client, pretending to settle the matter and told our client to contribute money to buy for his destroyed phone.”
