Lockdown: Etsu Nupe sponsors online language training

Sponsored by the Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, a one month “Nupe language e-class” was kick-started Friday to encourage compliance with the ongoing stay-at-home order over the rampaging covid-19.

Director, Indigenous Languages Learning Centre (ILLEC), Adamu Idris Manarakis, said the class has been designed to keep participants busy in their homes as they observe the order.

In the class, basic reading, writing and counting are being thought in Nupe, Manaraki said.

According to him, 90 people were selected for the class out of 155 who applied.

The director explained that three instructors take turns to teach participants grammar, mathematics, translation and sciences, all in Nupe.

Blueprint reports that there have been a number of interventions geared towards boosting the speaking and understanding of Nupe among young people in recent times.

Although, it arguably not among the endangered languages in Nigeria, there have been concerns it is being encroached by foreign languages, especially among the young people.
