Local equity market closes lower, sheds N72bn

Trading activities on the floor of Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on Friday returned to bearish run, declining by N72 billion.

The loss recorded in the Aradel Plc, Nigerian Breweries, Transnational Corporation of Nigeria, Wapco Plc, multiverse wipe out gain recorded in the shares of UACN, Universal insurance, Learn Africa, Nahco and other 35 companies.

The market capitalisation of listed equities depreciated by 0.12 per cent to N61.303 trillion from N61.375 trillion reported the previous day.

The NGX All Share Index also declined by 118.92 basis points to 101129.09 points from 101248.02 points it closed on Thursday.

The trading for the day showed that 39 companies took positive direction while 15 firms that closed in red outweigh the gainers forcing year to date return to go down to 35.25 per cent.

An analysis of the investment showed that three companies, UACN, Universal insurance and HoneyWell Flour led gainers table with 10 per cent each to close at N30.25, N0.44 and N6.05 per share respectively, LearnAfrica followed with a gain of 9.92 per cent to close at N3.88 per unit, Nahco added 9.89 per cent to close at N46.10 per unit.

On the contrary, Multiverse topped losers chart, dropping by 9.80 per cent to close at N4.60 per unit, Aradel trailed with a loss of 9.09 per cent to close at N664.0 per share, International General Insurance fell by 8.13 per cent to close at N1.47 per share, Wapic Insurance dipped by4.49 per cent to close at N1.70 per unit, Nigerian Breweries down by 3.33 per cent to close at N29.00 per unit.

The volume of trades increased by 104.19 million, representing 25.33 per cent as investors traded 515.564 million shares valued at N16.488 billion in 11554 deals against 411.374 million shares worth N26.303 billion exchanged hands the previous day in 10260 deals.

Transactions in the shares of Zenith Bank led market activities with 60.410 million shares valued at N2.728 billion, United Bank for Africa followed with account of 43.454 million shares worth N1.470 billion, Sterling exchanged 43.319 million shares valued at N216.300 million, universal insurance exchanged 28.313 million shares cost N12.415 million while GTCO Plc traded 23.512  million worth N130.381 million
