‘Libel’: Diezani drags Malami, EFCC to court

The former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke has taken legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), alleging libel.

In suit CV/6273/2023, Alison-Madueke claims that both the EFCC and the AGF disseminated false and defamatory reports about her on various news platforms, accusing her of corruption, dishonesty, and moral degradation. She asserts that these publications have tarnished her reputation and character, which she considers crucial for her political pursuits.

Through her legal representative, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), Alison-Madueke has filed a writ of summons at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

She is seeking the court’s intervention to compel the defendants to retract the published materials and issue an unreserved apology to her in three national newspapers.

These materials, she argues, have caused her significant harm over the past eight years due to their falseness, injurious nature, malice, and libelous content. Furthermore, she requests a court order restraining the defendants from further disseminating similar offensive and defamatory materials concerning her.

Additionally, Alison-Madueke is pursuing a compensation claim of N100,000,000,000.00 (100 billion naira) as damages. She asserts that the false, injurious, malicious, and libelous publications against her were facilitated through the EFCC’s publishing platform, in collaboration with both the agency and the AGF.
