LG Poll: Women back female aspirant for chairmanship in Akwa Ibom

Women from Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state have drummed up support for Hon. Mercy Bassey to become their council chairman as the 2024 local government election approaches.

Speaking on behalf of the women at her residence in Mkpat Enin during a women’s stakeholders meeting on Tuesday, the President of Mbong Iban Mkpat Enin, Obonganwan Rose Ekanem, noted that Bassey’s aspiration is a step in the right direction.

She stressed that Bassey has done creditably well within a short period of becoming the transition chairman of the council, and her performances have caught the admiration of the people in the LG.

The Obonganwan urged all the women in the area to rally around and give the aspirant the necessary support until she becomes the chairman of Mkpat Enin local council.

“I have called you here as women leaders of the fourteen wards and four clans of the council to join hands with the Mbong Iban Mkpat Enin to build our dear council area by voting into office Hon. Bassey as the next Executive Chairman of the Council.

“As experienced women, we are all witnesses to how Mercy Bassey transformed the Council Secretariat into a new Jerusalem. She has painted the hall, cleared the bushy field, constructed dilapidated facilities, and intervened in the state government road project that was completely abandoned by the immediate past administration for two years. I am talking about the only state road that leads to the biggest market in Mkpat Enin (Urua Ukam), Ikot Akpaden, where people from nearby LGAs and states come to buy and sell.

“Within her first month in office as a Transition Chairman, Hon. Bassey rehabilitated the road and made it comfortable to ease transportation and save lives. Lady Bassey has also graded the road that links many villages, including Ibebwe, Ikot Mkpeye, Ikot Unya, Ikot Eyienhe, and Ife town, to make life easy for citizens living in interior rural areas.

“Our daughter has converted our fallow hectares of land into a big farmland, planting varieties of crops, including cassava, 490 stands of plantain, vegetables, okoro, tomatoes, and corn. When I visited the farm, it was pest- and weed-free, as the chairman employed over six farmers with a monthly salary of not less than N50,000 each.

“The shoe factory is also set to start selling our homemade shoes to major distributors in the country. As a child of honor, Mercy is currently building a Traditional Ruler’s council house at the Secretariat for all the traditional rulers in the council.

“She also rehabilitated the cottage hospital in Odoro-ikot, unroofed the dilapidated roof, and replaced it with new zinc. She provided a borehole water supply, toilet, installed lights, and provided the hospital with brand new beds and other basic amenities to promote healthy living and save lives.

“We want a woman to govern us because she has dried our tears, and she is social and understands the needs of her constituents.

“With all these achievements within six months as a Transition Chairman of the council, we are convinced that if given the opportunity for three years, Mercy will ensure food sufficiency and create job opportunities for the people of the area. This is in line with the governor’s ARISE agenda, which prioritizes agriculture for sustainable development and food security for the state,”she added

Ekanem, however, appealed to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno and all the political stakeholders in Mkpat Enin to support Bassey by considering her the preferred choice for the party ticket, adding that the lg was far beyond having a neophyte as chairman.

“We call on the state governor and his wife, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno and Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, to support our daughter to complete all the visions she has for the development of Mkpat Enin LGA.

On her part, the Woman Leader representing Ikpa Ibom ward 2, Mrs. Emem Usoro, expressed satisfaction with the choice of the transition chairman as the next Executive chairman of the council, assuring that she will harness the resources in the local government for the benefit of the the people.
