LAUTECH closure: Our children academically distressed – Parents

Barely 10 months after closure of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), owned by Oyo and Osun state governments, some parents have expressed fears that the academic future of their children could be jeopardised.

Speaking to newsmen on behalf of the concerned parents resident in Kano yesterday, a school teacher, Mrs. Yinka Adeniran, said the indefinite closure of the University had been a cause for serious concern to their children, adding that they were academically distressed because of the lull in their academic activities.

Adeniran noted that resolving the stand-off that led to the closure of the University would ginger the confidence of parents that governors of Osun and Oyo states were really concerned about the pathetic condition of their children, affirming that the swift intervention of the Oba in the two states would assist in resolving the intractable deadlock.

She, however, stated that they considered LAUTECH as one of the most revered citadels of learning in the country, where quality graduates and enterprising academics graduate from.

According to her, putting a cog in the wheel of the academic pursuit of its students is tantamount to jeopardising their chances of becoming useful citizens, whose knowledge can be adequately tapped for the progress and development of the country.

She said the continued rot in the nation’s education system was what “is currently forcing the most affluent people in the society to look for ways and means of sponsoring their children to study in foreign Universities, where they can earn their degrees without encountering unnecessary obstacles,” adding that “children of the less privileged ware left at the mercy of government.”

While appealing to the governors, the Oba of the two states for their prompt intervention, Adeniran stressed the need for parents to step up effort in drawing the attention of other stakeholders to prevail on the authorities concerned to re-open the university.
