Lasun seeks executivelegislature cooperation for good governance

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Yusuf Suleiman Lasun, has advocated greater cooperation between the executive and the legislature in the advancement of democracy and good governance in the country. The lawmaker, who gave the advice while delivering a speech at the Leadership/Capacity Building Workshop for House of Representatives Members and Support Staff of Financial Crimes Committee in Abuja, noted that “the effective organization of legislative drafting work within the Legal Drafting Departments of institutions is largely responsible for the successful delivery of governments’ plans, programmes and policies in support of good governance in the country.” According to him, “one of the innovative strategies for effective organization of legal drafting process is to promote synergy and good working relationship between the executive and the legislature.
It is equally crystal clear that we need strong cross-border cooperation to make sure that our highly-trained legislative drafters are well equipped to achieve the required goal and best practices necessary for the enhancement of good governance in Nigeria.
“The structure and functions of the Legal Drafting Department under presidential system of government could benefit from a number of innovations existing under the parliamentary counsel office within the Parliamentary system that could substantially enhance the functionality and output of work in the Legal Drafting Department.
Indeed, lessons can be learnt from best practices from other common law jurisdictions, operating either the parliamentary or presidential system of government.” He stressed that “great efforts are required to strengthen the legal framework of anti-corruption in Nigeria as well as strengthen the institutions whose mandate revolves around the fight against corruption.
We are no doubt on the path of greater success with this laudable capacity building initiative.” In a remark, a key participant, Hon Oladele Kayode, commended the Deputy Speaker for his leadership mien and administration candour and asked for greater support for the actualisation of the programme.
“I will commend the Deputy Speaker because he has done a lot of work .
Last week was also the passage of the Process of Crime Bill.
The two bills are important in the membership of Nigeria and Financial Action Taskforce is important to Nigeria, because South Africa is the only member in Africa today,” he said.
