Lalong, ‘uncommon’ senator in the ‘uncommon’ senate

A lawyer, former member and two-term speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, National Chairman, Forum of All Speakers, Conference of Speakers of States Legislatures of Nigeria, two-term governor of Plateau state, former chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum, director general of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council and immediate-past Minister of Labour and Productivity, His. Excellency Rt. Hon. Senator Dr. Simon Bako Lalong just got sworn into the ‘uncommon’ 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to fittingly represent the good people of Plateau Southern Senatorial District at the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Bringing his wealth of legal, policymaking and cognate legislative experiences, I am so sure that the former minister, being a renowned advocate of progressive politics and social change, would in his capacity as a lawmaker, continue to champion the cause to greatness by sponsoring life-changing bills that benefit Nigerians of all extractions while on special note, offer dividend of democracy to his constituents.

He is a peacemaker and architect of inclusive governance which underpin his pace as hero of Plateau modern politics and further justify the fast growing popularity and support he earns at the helm of the national polity.

He is loved by all, first for his quality to use scarce resources to achieve maximum results and most importantly for how he fairly treats the people devoid of ethnic, regional or religious disparity.

For instance, on assumption of office as the governor of Plateau state, workers code-named him “Governor Alert” because of Lalong’s commitment to prompt payment of salaries and other workers’ emoluments. This is contrary to the preceding experience in Plateau when the state government would owe workers over nine months salaries. Lalong did ensure he cleared all backlogs and his administration was widely commended for sending monthly “mails to various inboxes” of the workers of the state without any delay and in spite of the difficult economic situation as at that time.

Moreover, contrary to the tradition of various successive governments in Nigeria who often neglect projects initiated by their predecessors, Lalong distinguished himself to ensure continuity. The completion of Secretariat Junction flyover in Jos, completion of the road linking Maraban – Jama’a, among many others, initiated during the administration of former Governor Jonah Jang, are some of the great examples.

This is why I believe we in the southern Plateau are lucky to have this God-sent leader to represent us in the Senate. While I am so sure we are going to be efficiently represented, it is my view to enjoin the people of Plateau South to continue to include our amiable Senator Simon Lalong and other leaders of the state in prayers in order to succeed in delivering us full dividend of democracy.
