Lagos SWAN to meet over Oyatogun

The executive committee of the Lagos state Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) will be meeting today to discuss the death of veteran sports broadcaster, Walter Oyatogun, as the body said they hope to play a ‘key’ role expected of it.

Speaking to Blueprint Sport the Lagos SWAN president, Fred Edoreh, said though the exit of Pa Oyatogun was painful, the greater joy for all that knew the veteran journalist is that he lived a fulfilled live and impacted a lot amongst the present crop of journalists.

“The executives of the Lagos SWAN will be meeting today to discuss the death of Pa Oyatogun. We as a body know we have a key role to play because Pa Oyatogun was one of us. For now, I have no details but once we get across to Moyo (Pa Oyatogun’s daughter) we will come out with what we want to do,” Mr Edoreh said.

Walter Oyatogun died on Valentine’s Day, February 14. He was a passionate sports news reporter for NTA for years. He died of stroke at the age of 78 after being in coma four days.

Born in Ghana, late Oyatogun before his foray in journalism was reported to have taken to sports early in life and acquired professional skill as a Physical Education graduate in France, after which he taught in various schools in Lagos.

He was also an amateur heavyweight boxer and one of the pioneers of keep-fit exercise in Lagos.
Pa Oyatogun is survived by three daughters who are also into media practice. They include Moyo, Moye and Layole  Oyatogun.
Family sources say the funeral programme for the late journalist would be completed in the next two weeks because they do not want the body to remain too long in the morgue.
