Lagos govt. announces 15-month traffic diversion for Mile 2 Interchange Hub

The Lagos state government, through its Ministry of Transportation, has announced a planned traffic diversion at Mile 2 to facilitate the construction of the new Multi-Model Interchange Hub.

“This project aims to integrate rail, bus, water, and non-motorised transport modes, simplifying travel and improving connectivity to other parts of Lagos,” it stated.

The government said the diversion would affect traffic on Loop 1 (Apapa-bound lane) and Loop 4 (Badagry-bound lane) of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, beginning on Monday, November 11, 2024, and is expected to remain in effect until Monday, February 16, 2026.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the government had arranged alternative routes to minimise disruption for motorists.

“Motorists heading to Oshodi from Apapa – Direct passage will be available.

“Motorists heading to Badagry from Apapa – Continue on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, turn onto Akinwande Road, connect with Coker, and access the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Motorists heading to Lagos from Badagry – Direct passage will be available.

“Motorists heading to Apapa, divert to Durban Road, link Amuwo Odofin Estate, and rejoin the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway,” the statement read in part.

The Commissioner assured the public that all diversion routes would be clearly marked, with signage guiding motorists.

The statement read further, “Officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will also be stationed along affected routes to assist with traffic flow.

Motorists are encouraged to exercise patience and cooperate with these temporary measures, which are critical for the timely and successful completion of this transport interchange hub project.

“The Mile 2 multi-model Interchange Hub is designed to be a central nexus for multiple modes of transportation, enhancing connectivity and significantly reducing travel times for Lagos residents.

“This strategic initiative is part of the larger Lagos State Transport Master Plan, which aims to create a seamless and efficient transport network across the state.

“The Lagos state government and Agence Française de Dévelopement (AFD) are funding the construction of the project being implemented by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

“Once completed, the interchange hub is expected to boost connectivity, improve travel efficiency, and enhance the quality of life for millions of residents in Lagos state.”
