Kwara varsity produces first set of graduates

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, would graduate the first set of graduates from it College of Engineering, this Saturday, at a convocation ceremony that also produced 23 first-class students.
In all the university would graduate a total of 1, 099 students at its fourth convocation.

The vice-chancellor, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah, disclosed these during a pre-convocation press conference in his office yesterday.
He said the management of the institution was excited over the number of students that bagged first-class degrees this session.
“We have 23 first-class graduates; this is over 100 per cent of what we had last year. This is an exceptional performance and it shows that our students and staff are committed to academic excellence,” he said.

He said the university had strengthened its entrepreneurship and undergraduate research units in line with its mission of producing employment creators and not job seekers.
“In the next one year, we will be planning a journal for undergraduate researchers to share our ideas with the whole World. KWASU is also developing a solar farm to produce electricity for our library 24 hours.”
On the economic challenge facing the nation, Na’Allah said Nigerian universities must urgently devise a means of diversifying the nation’s economy.
He added that “at KWASU, our focus is on this now (economic diversification) because we know Nigeria must survive.”

He said despite the biting economic situation which has led to a reduction in the institution’s subvention, “we have adhered to the vision of making the university world-class.”
He said the Kwara state government was committed to funding the university adequately “as soon as the nation’s economy improves.”
