Kogi workers down tools over unpaid salaries

Sequel to the expiration of the 7-day notice issued by the organised labour in Kogi state to the state government and the inability of the government to meet any of their demands, civil servants in the state are to commence indefi nite strike today.

Th e decision was taken by the joint session of Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and Public Service Joint Negotiating Council as they raised from a meeting held yesterday where the union resolved to resume the earlier suspended indefi nitely strike. At a press conference in Lokoja after the meeting, state chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Matthew Ojo Ranti, said they remained committed to their demands as contained in their letter to government with Ref No. NLC/ TUC/PSJNC/KGS/001/09 dated 13 September, 2017. Ranti said the strike would commence following government’s failure to pay salaries and other entitlements of the workers , stressing that they are prepared to stay at home for eternity if it takes the government eternity to meet all their demands.

According to him, the strike notice was sequel to the expiration of the time lag given to government within which to pay the July 2017 salary and to reverse some of the newly introduced rules that were not in tandem with the civil service rules. Th e workers demanded that “government should, as a matter of urgency, rescind its decision on clocking in and out policy in the public service of Kogi state, which aims at casualising the service on daily pay basis. Th is negates the provisions of National Councils on Establishment’s principles and practices guiding the civil service in the country”.
