Katsina customs generated N4.9bn last year

Katsina/Kaduna customs command has announced that it generated over N4.9 billion revenue, last year.

The Customs Area Controller, Alhaji Yerima Abubakar, made the announcement yesterday at a press conference, saying that the Command also generated the sum of N437.7 million for the month of January, this year.

Abubakar explained that the Command made 311 seizures, last year, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N997.6 million, while 15 seizures worth N10.1 million were made in January, this year.

He said some of the seizures made included rice, spaghetti, vegetable oil, pharmaceutical products, vehicles, and motorcycles, and that the goods were seized at different locations.

According to him, the Command made seizure of a Passat Station Wagon car last Sunday on Jibia/Niger boarder loaded with 681 rolls of tramadol, and that the suspect attempted to bribe officers with 435,000 CFA, or about N149, 000.
He said the arrested smuggler was a notorious drug courier from Niger Republic and had been on the wanted list for being “brain behind most of the drugs smuggled” into the country.

On welfare of customs officers and men, Abubakar said a total of 8,248 officers were promoted nationwide to their next ranks and that 253 of them were from the Command.
He commended efforts of sister security agencies for their support and cooperation in 2013 with call on them to continue with the effort, this year.
